McRae Kimathi following in the footsteps of his dad a head of WRC Safari Rally – KBC | Kenya’s Watching

Youngster McRae Kimathi is determined to follow in the footsteps of his dad and KMSF President Phineas Kimathi formerly a former Formula 2 champion and currently CEO of the  WRC Safari Project.

The 26-year-old second generation driver possesses the insatiable appetite for success and the common belief that the rally-sport is a discipline of possibilities ‘as long as one has the right mind-set and seat time’.

McRae is keen on emulating his father, Phineas Kimathi, on the fabled Safari.

McRae went on: “I have many stories of Safari from dad but never got to see the likes of Patrick Njiru and others racing then.

So, yes, I am overly excited about Safari. My father finished three Safaris with his best result being 13th in 1994.

He also finished 18th in 1999 and 14th in 2000. So I am enthusiastic about family history on the iconic event.

To beat dad’s record will be very hard but I will try. But the 2019 candidate event gave me a clue of what to expect in a Safari and what it’s all about. I was glad to be back on the podium.” he narrated.

Kimathi senior in his hey-days gave Hyundai their first national motor sport title worldwide in the KNRC F2 in 1997.

He was also the first person to win the F2 title in a WRC event for Hyundai. McRae, a career accountant, nevertheless believes there aren’t any shortcuts to stardom.

McRae started racing in 2015. His best KNRC result was Meru Rally 2019 where he finished fifth overall. 

He qualified for the program by virtue of being the current KNRC Division One leader.

“He was the youngest finisher in the WRC candidate rally held in Kenya in 2019.

“Currently, McRae is the highest-ranked indigenous driver after his eighth overall finish in the ARC Equator Rally held in Naivasha in April,” posed Kimathi.
