Heritage places that you cannot visit anymore

Timbuktu, in its prime, was a hub of Islamic intellectuals and was the scholarly centre of Africa. It has a number of places, recognised by the World Heritage Committee. A number of its sites, including some of the recognised mosques, were destructed by militant groups. These have been labelled as war crimes, and we can only hope for the situation to stabilise soon and reconstruction work to begin, as vowed by UNESCO.
