The Mother City has a plan to bring back the crowds, and their hard currencies, says Enver Duminy of Cape Town Tourism.

Covid-19 has kneecapped Cape Town – Africa’s most popular city for tourists.

Every year, its extreme beauty and uniquely interesting people draw in the crowds and their hard currencies.

A walk down the formerly rambunctious Long Street – now quiet with much of it boarded up – tells the sorry tale of a city dependent on tourists that do not come.

Flights to and from Cape Town pick up ‘signaling the beginning of recovery’

Flights to and from Cape Town continue to increase, according to City’s mayco member for economic opportunities James Vos. Vos says there may be some hope still for Cape Town’s visitor economy as flights to the city are starting to increase. Turkish Airlines is expected to increase flights to Cape Town from two to three flights per week, likely increasing to four flights by the end of March. Recently, KLM’s route between Cape Town and Amsterdam commenced and Qatar airlines commenced daily flights between Doha and Cape Town on Tuesday. Durban to accelerate plans for tourism recovery

PLANS to revive the local tourism sector took a step forward on Wednesday when the City hosted the Durban Tourism Imbizo. Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda hosted the dialogue to consult with industry players about efforts to re-ignite the tourism sector following the devastating impact of Covid-19. Minister warns of earlier than expected third Covid-19 wave in South Africa – which will bring fresh restrictions

While the rollout of Covid-19 vaccines continues across the world bringing new hope, the tourism sector will still have to operate alongside the virus with the threat of a third wave on the horizon, says Tourism minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane. “Scientists are telling us the virus has a high likelihood of further mutations whose effects are unpredictable, placing the economic recovery efforts in serious risk,” Kubayi-Ngubane said. Health Passport South Africa — a mobile app solution that offers quick delivery of COVID-19 test results — is now available locally. The platform is meant to help increase the safety of local events and streamline travel.
