Thunderstorms and heavy rain to strike parts of the UK on hottest day of the year

Thunderstorms, lightning, hail and heavy rain are expected to hit parts of the UK on what promises to be the hottest day of the year.

Balmy temperatures as high as 29°C are expected to soar on Wednesday following days of sunshine and hot weather.

For the second day in the row it was the hottest day of 2021 so far on Tuesday, which was the first day of meteorological summer.

Temperatures of 25.8°C were recorded in both Cardiff and Middle Wallop.

And Wednesday is expected to be another fine day for many, but thunderstorms are likely across parts of the UK.

The Met Office warns that the North East could see showers which may turn thundery on Wednesday evening.
